BASIC MASSAGE AND HYDROTHERAPY WITH SPECIALIZATION (605 HOURS)
A program consisting of 605 classroom (clock) hours. This program provides the following objectives:
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Massage Therapy Theory and Practice (230 Hours)
The practice of massage and competent touch must be based on a strong theoretical foundation. Students will learn the many benefits of massage as well as the indications that qualify a patient for massage therapy treatments and the contraindications that would preclude therapy.
Community Service: An important part of our program is Community Service. Students participate in supervised field work activities that provide massage to various populations.
Anatomy and Physiology (160 Hours)
The structure and function of the body are taught. Beginning with cells, the course proceeds through the organization of the body systems. Special emphasis is placed on the nervous, musculo-skeletal, and the cardiovascular systems. Appropriate pathologies are explored.
Hydrotherapy (15 Hours)
Discusses the scientific application of water in its various forms for the purposes of therapy and rehabilitation. Students learn the correct use of steam baths, hot packs, contrast baths, paraffin, hydro collators, etc.
Statutes, Rules, and History of Massage (10 Hours)
The Florida Statutes/rules and the history of massage are discussed.
Allied Modalities (107 Hours)
A comprehensive understanding of the different techniques or modalities of massage therapy is essential when charting the course of one's therapeutic massage career. An increased exposure to the variety of treatment methods allows students to make better choices as they further their education and continue their professional growth.
HIV/AIDS (3 Hours)
This course fulfills the Florida Board of Massage Therapy requirement for information and training on HIV/AIDS.
Specializations (80 Hours)
Basic Sports Massage: An introduction to the application of massage, hydrotherapy, and techniques used for muscular injuries incurred by both weekend and professional athletes is presented. Students will learn indications, contraindications, and treatment for a variety of conditions. Students receive opportunities to work in real life situations involving these techniques.
Neuromuscular Therapy: A basic program designed to enhance the students understanding of the relationship between the muscular system, nervous system, and the somatic dysfunctions that interfere with the body's attempt to maintain homeostatis. In addition, this course will present current paradigms and theories as to the mechanisms of pain and nociception. Through the practical application of theory, students will gain a better appreciation for the influence of somatic lesions, their pathological response on the tissues of the body, and the therapeutic interventions proven to eradicate pain and restore optimal function.
